Yen-Hsu Chou is a Taiwanese visual artist with a background in fine art sculpture. He is currently based between London and Taiwan as he completes his Master's in fine arts.
Yen-Hsu's work aims to create a strong visual identify through the combination of music, scenery and a little humour. His work examines how human beings survive in different environments through the exploration of different biospheres, melodies and outfits. Yen-Hsu played cello on the streets, forests, and among ruins. The erratic sound of the cello reflects humanity and the range of emotional states in various situations. Out of the traditional setting for classical music, with no audience, no stage and no accompaniment, Yen-Hsu brings music performance to where it doesn't normally belong.
As a premature baby, he sometimes had difficulty breathing when he was a child due to the incomplete development of the bronchi, so he often expresses the act of breathing through his works such as "Suffering" a 3.5 meter tall inflatable lung.Combining sculpture, installation and painting, nature and the natural body is the theme which runs through his work. Yen-Hsu relies on nature to help him complete works and bring to life experiences and memories, fusing them with an element of the absurd.
